Hails from: Dealu Mare, Romania. Grapes: Feteasca Neagra
It still surprises me that this wine is 14.5% ABV because it’s a smooth wizard. Feteasca Neagra is a variety indigenous to Romania roughly translating to ‘Black Maiden’. It’s the kind of grape that turns your fingers blue when you pick it. If you want something to compare it to think of a spicy Shiraz. This great value-for-money example from Budureasca is a mixture of dark berries, raisins and spice (cloves, black pepper). The concentration comes from the fruit, which is picked from 30 year-old vines. Superb with tomato pasta sauces or BBQ meat.
