Tesco wine guide

Each month I taste many wines from across the UK’s top supermarkets. In this guide I look at wines from Britain’s biggest supermarket, Tesco. Each month I choose three of the very best and update this list. You can view the best wines from this month first and then explore the rest of my wine recommendations from months gone by below. Load up this guide the next time you’re shopping online at Tesco.com or in store.

How do I rate the wines?

The star ratings work much like the Michelin system. No stars, no mention, but if a wine makes it onto this list it will have:

– ★ A star, meaning I recommend it as a ‘Good wine’ you should pick up. If you like the sound of my tasting note, grab a bottle on your next shop.
– ★★ 2 star is a ‘Great wine’ wine you should really seek out. If you want something new, go find one of these!
– ★★★ 3 star is a rare ‘Outstanding wine’, which is a bottle you won’t forget. This is worth making a trip to the shops just for the wine.

Tesco wine best buys for October 2026

Ben Franks reviews the Petaluma Chardonnay from Tesco

A Great Autumn White Wine Pick

2022 Chardonnay, Petaluma

★★ Great Wine

I recently tried Petaluma’s Sauvignon Blanc and was blown away, so when I saw Tesco had their Chardonnay I thought it was worth a go. This is full of candied lime and green apple over a creamy, leesy texture (six months on lees). The fruit is crisp and pure, which when you discover each parcel is separately fermented prior to blending, is unsurprising. Art!

Stellenrust Chenin Blanc from Tesco

Nutty, warming white for colder nights

2025 Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch Manor

★★ Great Wine

Fancy something fuller bodied? Chenin Blanc can wear many outfits. This barrel fermented version is packed with peaches and almonds, like a frangipane tart. Warming spice from a gentle oak note rounds it off. It would be a great pick with roast chicken, or a buttery risotto with butternut squash and mushrooms.

£15.75

Famille LaFont Lirac from Tesco review

A rich and spicy red wine

2025 Organic Lirac, Famille LaFont

★ Good Wine

Winemaker Julie Rouffignac’s Lirac blend from the southern Rhône is a rich and spicy red blend that doesn’t carry the price tag of Chateauneuf du Pape but in younger vintages like this tastes a load better. Texturally soft and silky, the wine’s got packs of fruit and will give you a big, warm hug (it’s 14.5% abv). Drink it with Shepherd’s Pie.

All previous months best Tesco wine picks:

Want to see my September wine picks? Here’s the top three wines I chose that month:

White wine pick from Tesco in September is Pikes Riesling

Wonderful, zippy Aussie Riesling

2025 Traditionale Riesling, Pikes (£13.00, Tesco) ★ Good Wine

Pikes is an Aussie classic but it’s a label I only tried for the first time last year. This Riesling isn’t sweet, it’s a dry and pure style from the Clare Valley made from high quality free run juice. The wine’s brimming with citrus and it pairs so well with white fish or goat’s cheese.

Langlois-Chateau Cremant de Loire sparkling wine is my fizz pick from Majestic wine

Last of the summer rosé

2025 Sancerre Rosé, Tesco Finest (£16.50, Tesco) ★★ Great Wine

Am I in my Sancerre pink era? I seem to keep falling for rosé from this Loire appellation in northern France. As Sancerre struggles with its recent vintages, the winner seems to be its rosé wines. The Pinot Noir grape makes for a fresh, bright and wild style of rosé I’m really enjoying!

Langlois-Chateau Cremant de Loire sparkling wine is my fizz pick from Majestic wine

Fantastic value Malbec

2024 Malbec, Trivento (£9.00, Tesco) ★★ Great Wine

I was pleasantly surprised that a brand as huge as Trivento could make such a fabulous wine. This Malbec, made from Mendoza fruit, is plush and silky with packs of blackberry and plum fruit. Its soft finish is satisfyingly pure without any of those horrid over extractive or gummy fining notes you get in other value Malbecs.
